Custom PCBs

Understanding Custom PCBs Features and Processes

Continual efforts put into research and development has led to the design and production of New Age electronic products and systems. As more advanced products are conceptualized, there is a need for new and unique components to be designed and manufactured.

In such cases, standard Printed Circuit Boards designs cannot meet the new requirements. To ensure that the electronic products can function and perform to required expectations, manufacturers need PCBs that are specifically designed. Enter the Custom PCBs.

As the name suggests, custom PCBs are unique, one-of-a-kind designs. They are constructed to meet specific operational demands of a particular electronic machine.

Custom Features

Custom printed circuit boards are designed with unique features to meet precise needs of an application. A few examples of these include:

  • Blind and buried vias
  • Heavy copper insulated boards
  • Conductive, epoxy filled vias

Examples of Custom PCBs

These circuit boards are built from the ground up. They are particularly useful in high technology research projects. A variety of circuit boards can be constructed using custom PCB designs. These include the following types:

  • Metal Core
  • Multilayer
  • Microelectronics
  • Aluminum Metal Core

 Custom PCB Options

The capabilities of every manufacturer is different. To ensure that their clients are clear on the manufacturer’s capabilities, PCB organizations list range of design specifications. A few examples of the same are given below:

  • Layers: 1 to 20
  • Minimum Thickness: 008ʺ to 0.032ʺ
  • Material Options:
    • Teflon
    • Rogers 4003
    • FR4
    • 370 HR
    • FR406
    • Rogers 4350
    • Copper and Aluminum base
  • Aspect Ratios:
    • Hole Size Range: 6 to 12 mil
    • Board Thickness Range: 8 to 125 mil

Special Processes

Unique design requirements calls for specialized processes. PCB manufacturers try to incorporate special processes to aid the design and function of custom PCBs. A few examples of these processes include:

  • Impedance board (request as± 10%)
  • High TG
  • Designs with or without halogen

Before you decide to go in for a custom PCB design, understand your product’s requirements completely. When looking for PCB manufacturers enquire about their various offerings, and see if they are compatible with your requirements. Ensure that the manufacturer is using materials and components of the highest quality. All these aspects will lead to the production of a high quality custom PCB.
